The new member awards initiative got off to a great start. Awards, in the form of Starbucks cards, were granted to 2 members at the last meeting. The awards were given to them because they were the newest members at the meeting that night.

Going forward, an opportunity to have lunch with the CIO or C-level Project Management Executive from one of the local corporations has been added to the list of award opportunities. Every member is eligible to participate.

Some of the criteria to win this prestigious award could include:

  • AdobeStock156327134Writing a scholarly article to be published in this or another PM publication.
  • Creating a useful tool or template that can be demonstrated and shown to facilitate the application of project management techniques.
  • Receiving recognition for speaking at a professional event that promotes the project management profession.
  • Receiving recognition for donating project management services to a non-profit organization (outside of PMINEO volunteer services provided).

All members are encouraged to participate in the awards program and all ideas are welcomed.

Please join us for a casual round of golf and socialize with other project management professionals.  Any skill level golfer is welcome to join.  This will be a 2-person, 3-club, and 9-hole shotgun scramble at the Washington Golf Course in Newburgh Heights.

After golf, we can go down to Panera’s on 6700 Rockside Road, Independence, OH for dinner and to socialize.

The chapter will not collect monies prior to the event.  Golfers will pay at the clubhouse. 

All participants are accountable for all costs for golf, food, and beverages the day of the event.

Topic:  "Lessons Learned from Great Projects in History."

Summary of Event:

Presented as part of the Baldwin Wallace University Center for Innovation and Growth’s Kerzner Lecture Series.

Focusing on International Project Management Day’s 2015 theme of sustainability, speaker Chris Wright will present an impactful presentation designed to illustrate that the fundamental challenges, obstacles, and constraints faced by projects of yesteryear are not much different than what project leaders face today. While technological advances and innovation have changed how project management is employed, many of the lessons learned from these great projects can serve as valuable insight into today’s projects.

Chris will provide insight into several of the greatest endeavors in history, including The Panama Canal project, through the lens of sustainability and modern day project management. Participants will not only gain knowledge of a historical event, but also learn how some of today’s “great” projects are not so great in comparison. Riveting and fascinating alike, this presentation will further promote the importance of integrating key lessons learned in every project.

JDRF Walk and Fundraiser September 20, 2015

Fundraiser for JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. The Northeast Ohio Chapter has a walking team that you may join to network with fellow project managers, get some exercise, check out the zoo, and help raise money for a good cause.

We had a great success with our event in Akron back in April. We would like to do it again in Brecksville this Fall.

Come network with your fellow project management and business analyst professionals at the 750ml Wine Bar in Brecksville, Ohio. This venue's motto is "good company, great conversation, fine wine!" This is a great way to meet new friends and catch up on the general business news in our field of practice.  We hope you will join us and bring a friend or colleague!

Participants that join us are accountable for their own alcohol purchases and consumption. There will be a cash bar at the venue. Participants must be over the age of 21 to attend. Drink responsibly!  Drive safely!

The chapter is collecting $10 per person to reserve a seat and to help with the cost of food only.

The chapter will also contribute to the food bill.

PMINEO is partnered with North Coast Job Seekers (NCJS) – a newly formed organization that is focused on career advancement for all professions in the NE Ohio area.

NCJS has a diverse and engaged Advisory Board who are committed to becoming the premier job seeker network / support organization in NE Ohio.  NCJS provides tools, tips, resources, techniques, and networking opportunities through dynamic speakers – to help job seekers maximize their job searches.  NCJS meets twice a month on the second and fourth Monday from 7:30 to 9:00 PM at the Pioneer Memorial Presbyterian Church (35100 Solon Road, Solon, OH 44139).

Volunteer of the Quarter

I’d like to take a moment of your time to recognize our 2014 Q1 Volunteer of the Quarter, Jai Jacobs. As our Director of Student Leadership Jai has introduced project management, our chapter and PMI Global, and certification options to over 100 students in the past few months. Students are an important part of our membership mix, and we look forward to Jai’s programming for the 2nd half of the year.

Strategic Plan Progress

Our chapter leaders continue to work on the metrics associated with the chapter’s new strategic plan, PMINEO BLUEPRINT 2020. The metric definition process followed a traditional model common for this type of effort, illustrated as follows:

Blueprint Model

We are currently operationalizing the metric process using chapter-specific data on membership, prospects, revenue, and sponsors. Later this year we will hold a formal review of these metrics and then publish an annual progress update. Rest assured, the operational metrics will be meaningful to all of our stakeholders.

Summary of Event:

Come celebrate International Project Management Day with us as we take an unconventional look at a blossoming vocation.

Highlighting where we came from and where we are we going, we explore the project management crown jewels in the United States.  We look at some of the most successful and important endeavors in the United States in the fields of science, spaceflight, transportation, and urban renewal.

Topic: The Future of Project Management

Over the years, a new breed of project manager has appeared. The new project manager has significantly more business knowledge than their predecessors. The project manager must make both project and business-related decisions and manage multiple stakeholders, each of whom has a different definition of project success, different reporting requirements and a different perception of value at the end of the project. As a further complication, the true value of the project may not be known until well after the project is completed. In addition, the new project managers will be assigned to nontraditional or more complex projects where the enterprise environmental factors will change continuously.  Project governance will improve as well. The project manager will learn how to recover failing projects and perform health checks. We will also have a much better understanding of success and failure.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Harold Kerzner is Senior Executive Director for Project Management for the International Institute for Learning (IIL). He has a MS and Ph.D. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Utah State University. He is a prior Air Force Officer and spent several years at Morton-Thiokol in project management. He taught engineering at the University of Illinois and business administration at Utah State University, and for 37 years taught project management at Baldwin-Wallace University. He has published or presented numerous engineering and business papers, and has published more than 50 college textbooks on project management, including later editions. His three latest books are (1) Project Management: A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling and Controlling; (2) Project Management Metrics, KPIs and Dashboards, and (3) Project Recovery: Case Studies and Techniques for Overcoming Project Failure.
He travels around the world each year conducting project management lectures in Japan, China, Russia, Brazil, Singapore, South Africa, Germany, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, France, Italy, England and Switzerland.

His recognitions include:

  • The University of Illinois granted Dr. Kerzner a Distinguished Recent Alumni Award for his contributions to the field of project management
  • Utah State University provided Dr. Kerzner with the 1998 Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the field of project management
  • The Northeast Ohio Chapter of the Project Management Institute gives out the Kerzner Award once a year to one project manager in Northeast Ohio that has demonstrated excellence in project management
  • The Project Management Institute (National Organization) in cooperation with IIL has initiated the Kerzner International Project Manager of the Year Award given to one project manager yearly anywhere in the world
  • The Project Management Institute also gives out four scholarships each year in Dr. Kerzner's name for graduate studies in project management
  • Baldwin-Wallace University has instituted the Kerzner Distinguished Lecturer Series in project management

Outstanding leaders have an excellent ability to understand and manage themselves and to understand and work with others. Technical and functional expertise is the foundation for effective performance however emotional intelligence (EI) distinguishes outstanding leaders from average performers. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and understand one's own feelings and emotions as well as those of others and use that information to manage ourselves and our relationships effectively. It consists of four fundamental capabilities: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management or social skill. This talk will introduce the emotional intelligence model, discuss the competencies associated with each of the fundamental capabilities, and introduce the six leadership styles and how they can be used in an organization. This information can be used to understand what distinguishes truly outstanding leaders from those who just happen to be in a leadership position.

Speaker Bio: Theresa R. Cassino, PhD, PMP is a biomedical scientist, engineer and project management professional. She joined PMI in 2012 and has been a member of the PMINEO Programs committee since October. She is currently serving as the Director of Programs for PMINEO. Theresa received her BS in Chemical Engineering from Rowan University and her MS and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). She acquired her PMP in June 2012. Theresa has experience in research, product development and project management on a variety of topics including specialty chemicals, flooring, molecular interactions, cellular mechanotrasduction, adult stem cells for cardiac transplantation and personalized medicine for oncology. Theresa is currently an instructor for American Graduate University and an independent coach with Team Beachbody. She recently completed her first triathlon (sprint distance) in July 2013 and will do an Olympic distance triathlon in September.
