For all the modern communication tools we have, there’s no substitute for authentic connections in-person between human brothers and sisters. This is one of a host of reasons why we love and look forward to the Annual Kerzner Awards Dinner.

Year after year, we come together to support great work, meet new friends, reconnect with old friends, and build excitement for the coming year.

Let’s face it. The day-in, day-out slog of project/program/portfolio management isn’t usually sexy. It’s tough. It can be repetitive. Building authentic, lasting connections to each other makes all the difference in the world. Because you’re not alone. Your team isn’t alone. And the work you do is important.

That’s part of the reason why we sponsor the Kerzner Project Management Excellence and Project of the Year awards.

Huge congratulations to Joseph Stuczynski for winning our
2018 Kerzner Project Management Excellence award!
Huge congratulations to the GE Lighting IT team for winning our
2018 Kerzner Project of the Year award! We appreciate Anne Rossoll
and Bill Cook coming out to accept the award and support the work of PMINEO.

So get out there and make connections. Learn and grow together with PMINEO and our many partners. Get connected on LinkedIn, yes. But make time…invest time in-person with your fellow PMs from all over the region. We love you all and are thankful for your faithful and active support as members!

Student Leadership Development @ PMINEOJacob-Jai

By  Jai Jacob, VP  –  VP of Student Leadership Development

February 22, 2017

Evolving the project management profession involves outreach to practitioners, organizations and academics. Project Management Institute (PMI) has recognized that to advance the profession, chapters need to partner with universities to educate the next generation of project professionals.

In December 2013, PMI Northeast Ohio (PMINEO) Chapter launched a pilot to build bridges between academics and practitioners. Two members reached out to Tri-C (Cuyahoga Community College) and presented an introduction to project management. This was followed by a presentation at Case’s School of Medicine – the school identified a need to introduce project management / PMI certification to prospective entrepreneurs in the medical arena.

In 2014, the Student Leadership Development (SLD) team was created, with 7 project / program managers, to realize objectives and meet the demands of our partners. The mission: ‘To transform the lives of students and their influence in societies through the application of project management knowledge’

Today, PMINEO SLD serves over 6 universities and 10 schools to evolve the business mindset and promote leadership skills. A single university may have one or more schools that benefit from PMINEO SLD product offerings. For instance, Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) partners with CWRU’s Weatherhead School of Management and Case School of Engineering.

We have sustained partnerships with 5 universities, which include:

  • Baldwin Wallace University
  • Case Western Reserve University
  • Cleveland State University
  • Kent State University
  • University of Akron

Having realized the initial objectives, the team continues to monitor progress against defined metrics. The accompanying graph shows our accomplishment - in 2016, we presented to over 180 students.

More recently, the SLD has accommodated requests from volunteer organizations such as Boy Scouts of America to educate troop leaders on the benefits of project management for scout projects.

Objectives

In addition to University Outreach, the Student Leadership Development team is responsible for the following offerings:

Scholarship: PMINEO sponsors a US $2,000 scholarship award for students residing in the Northeast Ohio area, who attends or plans to attend an accredited college or university program. SLD manages the selection process with PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF).

Networking events: Students are encouraged to attend the monthly PMINEO chapter meetings to build professional relationships. In addition, the team holds events such as ‘Speed Mentoring’, ‘Resume workshops’, etc.

Course Accreditation: The team assists universities on PMI accreditation activities for Project / Program Management courses. This helps universities to be aligned with the current Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) version and the recent focus shift to the PMI Talent Triangle (Leadership, Technical Project Management, Strategic & Business Mindset).

To meet increasing demand from current and new academic partners, we continue to seek volunteers who are interested in:

  • Developing our product offerings
  • Offering customized solutions
  • Promoting project management and certification

This provides an excellent opportunity for practitioners to give back to the community and enhance presentation skills. Pursuing academic partner organizations continues to be a primary focus of PMINEO SLD and the team focuses on preparing students to stay relevant and competitive. Topic: Change Management: The Undercover Role of the Project Manager

Presentation Summary: Do you have the fundamental change management knowledge to assure project success?

Change management for organizational change, specifically stakeholder and customer acceptance, is a responsibility of the project manager. But, it is a role that is typically underappreciated… underutilized… and frankly not even recognized by many project managers. Change management is complex. There is no cookbook recipe you can find and then simply apply to your situation. Change management is necessary for success. Just like a battery stores up energy, you need to store up knowledge of change management and then apply when needed. This presentation will help you do just that.

Forest City Enterprises (FCE) hosted the inaugural “Birds of a Feather” event with PMO representatives from many corporations throughout Northeast Ohio. Companies represented were: Forest City Enterprises, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland RTA, DFAS, Eaton, Ernst & Young, Goodyear, Keybank, PNC, Progressive and Vitamix.
There were different reasons the attendees identified for attending:

  • Gather information about other PMO’s, their challenges and best practices
  • Sharing/Leveraging other’s success stories
  • Identify PMO structure which works in silo’d culture
  • Identify areas of organization PMO effectiveness (business value add) and improvement
  • Engagement ideas
  • Criteria for killing projects
  • Governance and stage gates
  • Resource capacity planning optimization
