A project is a unique set of tasks, with a finite beginning and ending, which produces an outcome of value to the customer. This has been, and will continue to be, the definition of a project. Many other things have changed, however, since that original definition was formed, including how we define that “outcome of value” and the environment in which our projects are formed and executed. As a result, how we manage our projects is changing to adapt to our customers’ needs and our environment. Project Management is a process. Therefore, we can look to some fundamental aspects of this discipline to improve how we manage projects to successful conclusion. In this session, we will focus on performance metrics, an integral component of managing a process. We will provide insights and techniques to help answer these questions: How do we define “success” and “business value”? What influences achievement of those? What, when and how do we measure to determine progress and drive fulfillment? What do we do with that data?
